The machines and different softwares read leaks a little diffrently. The manufactures requirements are even more stringent than my own. As a rule of thumb a leak value that is less than 4x the pressure value is acceptable to me. If your pressure is 10cmwp than you would not want your leak any higher than 40 if possible. I do give a little more freedom with Full Face masks as they tend to be leak monsters. Sometime you have to comprimise with a little leak to get a small amount of additional comfort. More importantly to watch is what your AHI is doing at different leak values on the same pressure setting.

Using a nasal mask with nasal problems has to be tough. I would imagine that a turbinite reduction would help in your case. Have you considered a full face mask until after the surgery?

Yes I have a full Respironics mask, but find the leakage and AHI increases when I use it. I don't understand the reason behind this unless its the level of leakage that renders the mask infective.

I tried at least 10 masks until I found the 'Respironics' FitLife, which surprisingly gives me the least leaks of any full face ones. I think it's down to finding the 'right mask for the person' regardless of who the manufacturer is, which is why I think it would be good if the sleep clinics stocked ALL the manufacturers masks - in an ideal world of course, sigh....

I find when I use a full face the leak and ahi are worse unless I up the pressure a little (mine is set at 8min 18 max with a swift FX or Sleepweaver, I up it to 10 or 12 min if I'm needing to use the full face mask and the Quattro FX seals much better at the higher pressure).

We have found that a FFM requires about 2cm more pressure to do the same job of a nasal mask.

Quick question about leak rate. My machine reports about 25l per minute which I am assuming is a total flow rate as I haven't got a mask programmed in, I tried a sleepweaver élan last night and it reported 15lpm, which seems quite low. Is the lower venting rate a problem and could it result in more effort being required or actually insufficient flow to supply air and vent co2?
Pressure is set at 8 to 18 and machine is an icon auto.

The masks are made to allow for proper venting of Co2. They could not be on the market in either of our countries if they were not. What pressure are you on? Resmed machine?

Pressure is minimum 8 max 18 on a fisher and paykel con auto, 95% pressure is 9

I forgot you had the Icon like me. Those leaks are great for either mask. I would not worry.
