Blocked Nose with CPAP
The following is a Discussion posted by Diane Lester, which I managed to delete by accident when working on the forum on the train - whoops and sorry Diane, and the others who had added comments. It is not a word-for-word transcript, but am trying to salvage it from short excerpts of email notifications and memory (and like a lot of people on CPAP, my memory's not always so sharp).
Diane Posted that she's having trouble with a blocked nose, especially now the hayfever season is upon us, and has been using sinex. Any help would be appreciated.
Kath Hope said..."If you mean Vicks Sinex Diane, then my GP told me not to use it too often, as overuse can actually cause a blocked nose. I used to use Nasonex on prescription, but since my nose surgery I don't need any sprays, and only use the Breathe Right strips."
Deb Purcell said..."Hi... Yes I also have problems with a stuffed nose I usually use a saline spray which is a natural product, and some nights I just cannot use my machine as I am worried I may suffocate..or try some Sinex."
Kath Hope responded... "Are your filters ok Diane as they might need changing? If you still have your Resmed S6 machine, the blue/white hypoallergenic filters need replacing every 1-2 months, and the white ones 4-6 months."
Diane Lester said... "I only have one filter - the long white one in the back. That reminds me to phone up for some more. The blocked nose is from when I go to bed which I hope will soon clear as the year goes on."
Kath Hope said..."My daughter has hayfever, and she gets a real strong inhaler, by prescription only, but it's only for severe short-term use. I was given this to try before my turbinates operation. Apparently if it's successful, it's evidence that the operation would help. It did, and so did the op :)
Darryl Milligan said... I am having the same problem the last few days. Piriton & Sudafed are of limited use. I am waiting tor a telephone consultation right now from my GP. As I use nasal pillows, it's a big problem.

He prescribed me Mometasone spray.... it seems to be helping quite well. I also badgered the hospital until they gave me pollen filters for my CPAP machine.

That's the name my daughter and I couldn't recall Darryl. It's good stuff, but we were told is only short-term, so enjoy it while it lasts :)

My doctor prescribed Becconaise spray which I only use if really necessary but is effective.

A blocked nose is common on CPAP. Are you on humidification? You can be fine for ages and then suddenly problems occur which are difficult to resolve. The best thing is to try humidification .... Most devices have a bolt on option

I am sorry to say that I have pollen filters used two different types of nasal spray and a humidifier but this had no positive effect on my blocked nose. I am now awaiting surgery to reduce my turbinates and anticipate that this will resolve the issue as I only get between four and five hours disturbed sleep at night. My operation has been cancelled as they didn't have a high dependency bed and now have to wait until 3rd September. It is frustrating but keep pursuing the medics until you get a resolve.
