Sleep Apnoea Forum Bringing Help + Support to the Patient

Welcome to our Forum - Feel Free to Introduce Yourself Here.

Welcome to the Hope2SleepGuide Forum, which is a service run by the Hope2Sleep Charity founded by Kath Hope with a marvellous team of trustees and volunteers.

Kath herself has severe sleep apnoea and hypoventilation/hypercapnia, and has used CPAP for several years and is now on non-invasive ventilation.  Our trustees and volunteers are all either sufferers of sleep disordered breathing or clinicians/medics working in this field, and most importantly, we are all passionate in supporting (with empathy) others and raising awareness to help people live healthier and more energised lives.

Whilst we do not give medical advice, more often than not, with support, tips and knowledge, people can overcome any problems experienced with our therapy, and there is a whole page dedicated to this on the website http://www.hope2sleep.co.uk/tips-for-problems-sleeping-with-cpap-or...

Please come and join us, and don’t feel obligated to use your ‘real’ name if you prefer to remain anonymous as this is a public forum.  Don’t be shy in posting and sharing, as we’re all in this together and to help each other.

Best Wishes for good sleep!

Agreed, there are many reasons behind being overweight. What annoys me (and I am a journalist myself) is the way the media regards it as a sign of overeating, junk foods, couch potato lifestyle etc, and so by implication OSA is a self-inflicted condition. Even The Times has been guilty of this error, though to give them credit, a couple of years ago they did publish a letter from me putting them straight.

It's good to see that awareness is being increased.

Nothing is ever black or white is it? Some people are couch potatoes and get fat because of laziness and others (like me) seem to be allergic (for want of a better word) to carbs! I only have to deviate a tiny bit from my really strict eating regime and the weight creeps back on.

Prior to having the cpap machine, I only had to have one bit of pasta or potato type of carb and the weight would go up. I had to be on protein and lettuce to actually lose weight. The best I could do was to maintain my weight (albeit massive). The sleep really makes a huge difference to me and probably to many of you.

Bodies that never shut down don't function properly and tired people have no self discipline. The whole thing is complex. Some of us inherit the OSA symptoms and some of us have wide tongues.

There are always people out there waiting to judge us. They should look in their own back yards (planks and logs or something?).

We still need to do everything we can to lose weight. We have no option if we are to become healthy. Not easy though. Rosemary

Stephanie, welcome, I think you have come to the right place, we can give you the support and try to give you the help you need. We are all in this together and at least we understand what you are going through, it's not easy but life saving.

Have been on cpap for two years ,struggled for 3 months ,however feel great now and have not missed a session in two years. If you have just started and want to jack it in - DON'T, keep with it.

I need some help,i have developed one or two nasty spots on my neck where the mask strap rests, any advice gratefully received.

Glad to hear you're feeling great + managing 100% compliance Mick.  If you're referring to the back of the neck, the easiest fix is the Neck Strap Covers on the main website shop http://www.hope2sleep.co.uk/products/23 and glad to hear this is your only problem, which can hopefully be easily solved!

Hi Mick,

Brilliant that you are feeling so much better now.

Thoughts about the difficulty where the straps have been on your neck. First of all do you wash the straps regularly? If they get a little greasy from your face they may need more regular washing or perhaps different washing?? I use Fairy non bio liquid and a tiny bit of it. Then I rinse the straps thoroughly and dry them off a bit on a clean towel before hanging them to dry completely. They usually take a day to dry out if I do that.

Maybe the straps are a bit too tight? Have you tried adjusting them so that they rest diffenrelty on your face and neck? Just a thought. Perhaps you already have the optimnum position for the straps.

Another thought is the special moisturiser that you can get from Hope2Sleep. It may help your neck to have that applied where the masks and the straps are going to be but not too much of the stuff as if it is wet the straps will get covered in it and that could attrract grease. Use the mosituriser sparingly and allow it to dry on your neck before attaching the mask.

These ideas may not help at all but I hope they do.

I've been using the cpap for approaching four years now and even now I get it wrong sometimes. My hopsital gave me some different straps to try as well. Perhaps yours will do the same of you ask them.

Good luck and sleep well. Rosemary

Mick, I agree with Kath re the strap covers, the pores on our skin don't like the rubbing causing sores on some people. What I do is I make my own mask liners and any excess material I cut into strips and wrap them around the strap wear it is rubbing. Once they get better you may or may not need to use the material. It's good that you are going so well.

Hello, I'm Karen. I've got complex sleep apnoea, I think! I've got an AHI of 18.7, and 12 are centrals, so I think that makes it complex. I've had a CPAP trial, and I'm getting my own machine on Monday. I'll have another home sleep study, with the mask on, in a month, to see if it's making any difference! I've had a trial for 5 nights and I think it definitely helped, so I'm excited for Monday and the start of good sleep - finally!

Welcome Karen, I'm sure your very excited and may be a bit nervous, I know I was but love my CPAP and can't sleep without it because I know how much good it has done me. Please let us know when you get your machine and what brand and type it is as well as the mask and we can give you some tips. Good luck, a positive attitude towards it goes such a long way.
