APAP to CPAP
Hi,
I started therapy on 7th January. The Hospital gave me a Resmed S9 Autoset for a week so that they could work out the pressure that I needed.
After the week I went back and they determined the 95th percentile pressure was 13.2 so they set this on a Resmed S9 Escape CPAP. I am to use this for a month before going for a check up.
The first week with the APAP was brilliant however since moving to the CPAP I am not feeling as refreshed in the day. I'm not sure if the pressure is wrong or the fact that I am getting the full 13.2 all the time and getting the occasional leaks into my eye.
Is this normal? Can I get my own S9 Autoset instead of the hospital provided S9 Escape?

Thomas, the autoset is much better, I use one and hated the constant pressure, if you go down that track they will set a minimum and miximum pressure for example mine is 5-15 but hardly ever hit 15. Kath or one of the others will be the better ones to tell you about changing.

Welcome to the forum Thomas, and pleased to hear you got diagnosed. I've just been speaking with someone who was recently diagnosed and a few weeks later discovered they have also been diagnosed with heart failure. Hopefully, CPAP will improve this for them and sounds like her diagnosis was just in time!
I hear your story quite a lot about people faring better on APAP than CPAP, but unfortunately a lot of NHS clinics don't offer these. You can purchase your own (I did) and I would recommend going to the manufacturer directly for the best price and any aftercare support you may need in the future. The good thing about having an APAP is that you can still run it in CPAP mode, but CPAP can't run in APAP. Speak to your clinic first to see if they can issue it and good luck...

Thanks for the replies. I never really knew the APAP was on as it was always at its minimum whilst I was awake. I'm back at the clinic in 3 weeks so will enquire about it then.
The whole process has been brilliant. I went to my doctor the end of November and he referred me after completing the Epworth Sleep scale. He suggested it would be a few months to get seen but in fact it was just over two weeks to get the appointment at Chesterfield Royal Hospital for the home blood oximeter test. I then received the appointment for the CPAP trial to start first day back after the new year.
Any idea of the rough cost of the the S9 Autoset?

Thomas, in Australia they are around $2000 or 1200 pound, but Kath will have a better idea on a price and you can get them cheaper over the net. Our insurance only covers 25% of the cost, but all I can say is I would have paid 10 times that amount for it, not only because its an autoset but just the quality of life I now have. I like that machine, it's small. quiet and i can get my daily data from it using software from a free supplier.

Ouch! To be fair I agree with you... That week with the autoset was a blessing! For so many years I just assumed I was lazy and unmotivated with the memory of a fish! It feels weird not having to have a 'siesta' in the evening!
I am a data junky and really liked the data I got off the S9 Autoset with ResScan. I also have a Zeo sleep monitor but thats not as comprehensive as the S9 Autoset.
I'll do some digging and see what price I could get the autoset for.

Thomas, you could prbably get it for half that over the net, I went that way because it was my first CPAP and wanted good after sales service for my first machine, the software we use is called sleepyhead and can be found at

I think you have to buty the ResScan data and I find sleepyhead just as good, I download my data once a week, good luck with your purchase.

Tom, you need to call Resmed direct as they don't allow anyone else in the UK to sell their machines which is why it's hard to find the prices here - 0800 917 7071. However, the machine I have is the Respironics System One APAP which retails for £499 but the humidifier is extra at around £100. I would guess Resmed's machine is around the same. If you stick with Resmed or use Respironics' you can use the free software Terry's posted, but it's not yet set up for Fisher & Paykel. . Like I said before, I would recommend getting the machine direct from the manufacturers. You can get them cheaper over the net from the US, but often the shipping and duty etc., bumps the price up. Then there's always the problem if they develop a fault as it's costly to send them back. Hope this helps.

Tom - if you need any assistance and fancy the F&P machine I have the software for the Icon Auto, and the company I bought mine from (not sure if I'm allowed to mention it here) will do analysis of the data also.
The Icon Auto is a very neat, compact machine, with a superb humidifier and a heated hose all as standard. It's expensive though (£785).

I have been in touch with Resmed and they have provided the prices etc. I just need to ask my sleep clinic to sign off as its prescription only.
I have been using the CPAP for just over 2 weeks now and still not getting used to it. I felt I slept much better with the APAP so really can't wait to go back.

Tom, the problem people have is if the just start out with straight CPAP and never try an auto they don't know the difference, it's when they either try both or the start with auto they can see the differences in comfort. I know for some people it's a price thing but I would always go with the auto, especially if your pressure needs to be fairly high. Apart from the comfort the auto machines adjust for other factors like weight gain or loss etc good luck

You're the 3rd person I've come across just this week Tom having difficulty with CPAP compared to their initial titration with APAP, and it's just a shame that so many hospitals can't/won't supply them, as for many people it makes all the difference for good and comfortable therapy. I have to say though that for me it makes no difference whatsoever - I can sleep just as well on CPAP as on APAP. Also, there are other people who, for whatever reason, cope better on CPAP than APAP. However, when purchasing a machine privately I would always recommend buying an APAP, due to the fact that you have the choice of running them on either CPAP or APAP.
It appears to be yet another case of 'what suits one doesn't always suit another' - just like the masks!
