Sleep Apnoea Forum Bringing Help + Support to the Patient

I was diagnosed with severe sleep apnoea middle of last year & although had a few teething problems re feeling claustrophobic using my CPAP machine I soon settled down & had the most amazing positive effect within weeks. After years of chronic daytime tiredness I found my energy levels soared & my chronic pain reduced significantly. At the time of diagnosis I was 5 stones heavier than I am now & was expecting to reap even more reward but that hasnt happened. My daytime sleepiness is worse than ever, the quality of my sleep abysmal-I am constantly waking up feelin as if Im smothering very similar to before my treatment, & rarely get more than 3-4 hours sleep in 1block. I feel I could sleep all day & sometimes do, I cant read for any length of time as I drop off within 30 mins or so, & have started falling asleep on car journeys again. My machine feels like its blowing too much air & I feel like I do in extremely windy weather, or am splashed in the face & it takes my breath away -I suffer panic when this happens, & wake smothering & panicked in the night with my machine on.
I was wondering if because ive lost so much weight I might need less puff- do you think this could be why? & what do you suggest?
I'm ever so sorry for the long post, thank you in advance for patiently reading x

Don't apologise Debbie and your problem isn't the first I've heard after a lot of weight loss.  Well done on that too

There are several theories of what it could be - one is that your pressure will need checking and probably adjusting and another thing I've heard of (not often though) is that sometimes when people lose a lot of weight their muscle tone can sag a bit, all over and including the neck, as the weight's come off making obstructions even worse (this isn't a reason to put the weight back on though as it can be sorted with the correct pressures ).  Also, you're probably lost a fair bit of weight from your face, so may need a new mask too.

I would contact your sleep clinic quickly and they'll hopefully arrange another sleep study.

What machine are you using?

thank you so much Kath for the quick reply you are a star :)
I did wonder about the face shrinking as im having lots of leakage & have to have the mask on very tight.
I have a Philips Respironics Remastar Auto Aflex & a Resmed Ultra Mirage Full Face Mask as I am a mouth breather. I will ring & make an appointment as soon as-I was horrified today tho-I was cleaning my machine & noticed the SDcard was ejected & I have no idea how long its not been recording. Will the nurse still have enough data from now until my appointment to know what's going on?

Don't worry at all about the SD card being ejected, as the machine is very clever and when you put it back in the memory from the machine will put all the info onto the card, so panic over

I'm sure you'll need a different mask now, so ring the clinic to get booked in as soon as you can, and let's hope they agree to another study.

Debbie, I agree with everything Kath and Mary have said, we need to remember that CPAP doesn't help us sleep, they help us to breathe and the biproduct should be more rested sleep. Your first step is to get all those things sorted out, when you go in, the main things you want to know is what your AHI is, should be as low as possible but below 5 and your leaks, you want the least possible. I think once you get those things sorted out you will be back on track and well done on the weight loss any loss of weight is good for our overall health.

you might need your pressure changed now you have lost weight.   let us know what your clinic says

CPAP Total Face Mask

I was curious whether anyone has used the CPAP Total Face Masks and could pass on their observations? I've been using an Airfit F20 for years which is fine apart from the permanent red mark on the bridge of my nose, and have recently tried the…See More

Pressure waking me up. Belching and wind

HiI'm using the prisma smart max machine. Initially I was just on a nasal mask, this changed as I was sleeping with my mouth open. I then went to face and nose mask and complained of bad wind and belching. Sometimes the pressure in the night was…See More
