Hi Newbie
Hi guys i stumbled on this site a day or so ago , i have been on CPAP for about four years now , the normal trouble to start off with , but now i don't think i could do without it now the truth be told , i have picked up a cough these last few days as i cough the filter pops out , i don't know what to do , as i keep a seal with Taping over my mouth , i have to be careful as i suffer from panic attacks when i can't get enough air through my nose i do find it difficult at times , can any of you guy's give me any advice i would be very grateful , ian ,x

Hi Ian, welcome to the forum. If I've picked up correctly from what you've put on your own page you are using a Resmed S8 with a resmed nasal mask. I've used 2 Resmed S8s in the past -one was a straight CPAP giving me a constant pressure and the other was an auto adjusting machine.
I'm not sure if I've understood the problem you are having properly. Do you mean the filter at the back of the S8 machine is popping out when you cough? I have never had that happen so couldn't give advice on that.
I normally use a nasal mask, but when I have a cold I sometimes use a full face mask instead so I don't have to worry about getting enough air through my nose. It might not work for you, but the Sleepweaver full face cloth mask is very light and might be worth having a look at.
Also, are you using a humidifier? When I first started using CPAP I didn't have a humidifier. After I'd been using CPAP for some time (several years) I started to get what I thought were hayfever symptoms coughing and sneezing and I was having to take antihistamines. All the coughing and sneezing stopped after I started using a humidifier.

Hi Lisa , i thank you for taking the time to write to me , i shall look into the sleepweaver full face one , i don't have a humidifier , i can adjust the machine but i have it on number 25 i build's up pressure , i am thinking of asking the hospital for a new one like i said its been over four years but it has done the job i'm not complaining , i have to take my time before i tape myself , i forgot to say i suffer from COPD that don't help with breathing getting up the stairs , if it's not one thing it's another , i thank you once again , ian

Aw poor you Ian, having to cope with COPD as well! See if you can try the full face Sleepweaver first if you have to buy one, as the few people I know who have tried it have been really disappointed. It's only just come out so perhaps the 2nd version might be better when they bring it out.
Did the hospital tell you to tape your mouth, as it's not really a good idea? You'd be better with a chin strap for a nasal mask or a full face mask.
Try to get your nasal airways as clear as you can so your nasal breathing isn't so restricted. I use the Breathe Right strips from the chemist or supermarket to help open my airways more, plus a nasal spray prescribed by the GP.

Hi Kath , thank you for your reply , on Tuesday i was put on steroids & Antibiotics my COPD flared up nasty chest so i am coping with that at the moment , please advise over taping mouth please i read it somewhere to keep the seal , plus wife says i snore when not taped , i must get my breathing down before i tape other wise i panic cant breath through nose quick it's a bit of a do but i sleep right through , i just hope i am not making a problem for myself , from what you have said , i don't think i would suit a full face mask sounds clumsy ??

People with nasal masks do need to keep their mouths closed, but I would never recommend taping the mouth shut, and it can be dangerous. Whilst the likelihood of anything happening probably isn't high, I personally wouldn't want to take the chance. I would definitely try a CPAP chin strap which encourage the mouth to stay closed, but still allows people to open their mouth when necessary. If you've not seen them, here's an example of a basic one over on the website http://www.hope2sleep.co.uk/products/66 There are more expensive ones too, but your clinic might be able to supply you with one. The other option would be a full face mask, or if you're worried about a full face mask being too much for you, then there are other options like the Hybrid http://www.hope2sleep.co.uk/products/96
