Sleep Apnoea Forum Bringing Help + Support to the Patient

Preparing my talk for tomorrow's radio show when we're intending to raise awareness of Sleep Apnoea to the Croydon area (and hopefully beyond) on why so many snorers suffer daytime fatigue and why it's very important to check for Sleep Apnoea, as untreated it is very dangerous! I'll be pointing out this is not just for overweight men, as it affects both sexes and children too!  Dave Etheridge the presenter will also be sharing his own story of how he struggled through life unaware he was a sufferer.

Please share + tune in if you can on Monday, 27th January at 11 am http://www.croydonradio.com/

Sorry to have disappointed you Edam, but whilst existing sufferers were interested in the radio show due to the fact that many people appreciate and support the work I do for free, it was really aimed at people who are not diagnosed yet.  The statistics were to get the attention of people with these other linked medical conditions to get them thinking that perhaps they may also be a sufferer.  Since the radio show was broadcast I've been inundated with positive comments from both existing and possibly undiagnosed sufferers.  However, my husband did warn me I was opening myself up to some criticism too, and he was right, although you are the first so far!

Actually Kath I thought it was very interesting and gave great advice. percentages? Everything in life is measured by percentages! That is a fact! Let's hope that with the great work you do and let's remember this is all free work you do I might add hours and hours of free work! The the percentages of strokes/Heart attacks are substantially lower after getting diagnosed and on CPAP treatment. After receiving the information From this Radio Show. :)

Edam I just had to respond to your rather negative comment.

I listened in on the broadcast and felt it was a really positive, informative piece, that would definitely help raise awareness for sleep apnoea suffers...  I welcomed this with open arms, because not only should we try to alert others to the possibility of being potential sufferers, I was glad because I want others to be informed, advised so that they understand how difficult it is to have and live with this condition daily. Unfortunately along with information gathering, there are always boring percentages but even these are necessary to measure with. By not listening properly you missed a really good piece of interesting broadcasting. I was proud of Kath for taking time out to explain our condition; I just feel it was a shame that you did not do the same... Hopefully you will get a chance to listen to the show again and then maybe you will reconsider your thoughts...there again maybe you won’t!

Dear Edam,

I have joined this forum today solely to defend Kath Hope. Kath does a sterling job in raising awareness of sleep apnoea. The nature of the radio show was an hour long chat show. Stats and percentages are necessary to GET THE MESSAGE ACROSS to listeners who WANT that sort of thing. Kath tailored her message to the audience.

I think she should be applauded not criticised.

I agree with Adrian, however, I can understand where Edam may be coming from - some people just cannot cope with figures and statistics - if he had continued to listen, persevering, he would have found much more than statistics. A smoker will not give up smoking because you tell him / her there is a risk of lung disease or cancer - if you can explain more graphically there is a better chance. As far as percentages go, people are generally unaware of how prevalent this condition is in our society, and indeed around the world.
I am a new, recently diagnosed case, and Kath Hope has been a rock (we've never met, or spoken), and her advice and knowledge, and persistence has kept me going with CPAP, when I just wanted to go and play the didgeridoo.
Thanks Kath - bless you, x

Its true  that I dont like stats. In my last job stats were more important than customer service.

Since trying to listen to the podcast I realise that it was not what Kath said which made me switch off.

My criticism was unfair as I should have listened to the rest of the broadcast.

Sorry Kath

Edam. You have gained my respect by admitting you were wrong and apologising. Top Man!

Hey Edam respect from me too... <3

Good for you Edam, respect keeps growing - bless you

it was excellent for one not accustom to public speaking and will improve beyond measure as more speaking appointments are made and delivered

Edam, I don't like stats either, but I knew it was important to use them on this occasion as I desperately wanted people to hear how high their risk is to undiagnosed sleep apnoea with their other medical conditions, and these were the people we wanted to reach out to.  I also appreciate the fact that so often we make statements on public forums and other social media platforms, forgetting our comments can be literally viewed by the whole world.  Believe me, I've said a few things in my time that I wished I hadn't as it is not in my nature to purposely offend anyone, and on these rare occasions have hoped that Google's web crawlers wouldn't pick up on them

I am very touched by these these lovely loyal members who have come to my defense too (thank you all) and I too highly respect a person who admits errors made (we all make them from time to time).  I'm the first one to apologise when I make a mistake, so believe me there are no hard feelings and I certainly accept your apology!

Kath, it's Sunday here in Australia and I'm listening to the Podcast, first I love your accent, we have only ever talked on here.

I want to congratulate you on how confident and knowledgable you were.

I have never been on the radio or TV but have spoken at work in front of a large numbers of people and panicked but you did so well because you know your stuff.

Once again, Well Done from Oz, by the way it's 41c in Melbourne today, could you please send over some of your weather, our trees aren't coping to well.
