Sleep Apnoea Forum Bringing Help + Support to the Patient
Finally got a diagnosis.
Today I finally got a diagnosis after going private, NHS test was classed as normal and GP told rest of family to buy ear plugs if they did not want to hear me snoring.
Had a private sleep study done and have been diagnosed with Moderate OSAHS
AHI of 17.3/hr increased to 29.1 in supine position
ODI is 2.3/hr with a snoring index of 69.2/hr in bed.
And according to NHS this is normal.

Ian, those numbers are not normal, 17 is moderate so you do have sleep apnea, hope your getting your CPAP soon.

Yes have ordered cpap machine should be delivered tomorrow, hopefully should start to feel better soon.

This is so wrong Ian and I'm assuming the sleep 'study' you had from the NHS comprised of just a finger pulse oximeter, which was not measuring your apnoeas, but the ODI (oxygen deprivation index) which is why they said it was normal. Not everyone with sleep apnoea suffers from severe oxygen deprivation, as their bodies work very hard to keep the levels up! However, repeated apnoeas can still put pressure on the heart even without 02 desaturations.
The private study you had done will have consisted of the oro/nasal cannula which was monitoring your breathing. This is why you have a 'diagnosis' now of 17.3 and 29.1 respectively. This concludes a 'diagnosis' of moderate sleep apnoea. Was this a certified diagnosis from a sleep doctor or was it a screening test without a diagnosis?

Therefore, you are entitled to CPAP, but obviously to get this from the NHS they need evidence from a polysomnography sleep study, and I am unsure if they will take as gospel your private study. This is perhaps for your GP to speak with them about.

Hi Kath,
yes it was a finger pulse oximetry on NHS that was classed as normal. The one I had done private was a multi-channel respiratory sleep study and I have now received a 10 page report about what they found in the study, I am going to photo copy the report and offer it to Gp but dont know if she will accept it.
Have a auto cpap being delivered tomorrow as was not prepared to wait any longer for NHS to see if they would supply it if they will accept report.

Good that you've been able to afford a machine, as untreated sleep apnoea isn't good. However, you need to press forwards with your GP and get him to contact the hospital, as this shouldn't be happening, so it may help other people in your area. Would be good to show him the NICE Guidelines or even your comments on this forum if you can get it on your phone/tablet. Let us know how you get on with your machine, and good luck

Glad that you have finally got a diagnosis of OSA , like you I had the finger probe and it did show that I have SA but not how sere it was. I had a full sleep test in February and I have serve sleep apnoea and also mild central sleep apnoea. Luckily I am able to get the machine on NHS as i wont been able to buy one. What is the name of your beautiful shepherd I also a long haired German Shepherd called Jai-Jai currently he is lame for some reason. He will 9 in January next year but he still thinks that he is 2 or 3 years old, so far I have been lucky with him as he hasnt got a lot of arthritis at the moment.

Hi Dee, I have 2 German Shepherds the one on my profile is Izzy who is 5 and ex police dog and we also have our old girl Pippa who is 13 today. She is the oldest that I have ever had, how long did it take you to get used to the cpap I am hoping that it wont take me too long to get used to it as last night was the worse night for a long time.
