Sleep Apnoea Forum Bringing Help + Support to the Patient

Over the last month, I have been using the Sleepy Head software, and as usual for me, I have been doing a bit of experimenting. My AHI is usually below 4 using a pressure setting of 15cm H2O. I usually have the humidity set at 2/5. As the pressure is quite high, and using nasal pillows, my "snotbox" can get a little dry by morning, so I started turning the humidity up... in stages over a week or two, right up to 5/5. My AHI went up in stages to match, up to an AHI of over 9 on a humidity setting of 5. Most of the recorded events on higher humidity settings occur after 4 hours of sleep, every night. This would tie in with the higher humidity levels having time to build up. I cannot find any published research on the subject, but it looks fairly conclusive to me that there is a direct link between AHI and humidity settings. Does anyone else have any observations?

I noticed that too rock. ....and closing your nasal cavity off at the back of your throat does wondrous things to your events too. I have a few masks, but I favour the opus 360 by far, and the humidity at 3.. I still wake dry & thirsty in the morning, but not too bad, but last nights AHI was only 1.96

That's a great AHI, I would put a glass of water next to the bed and run with it. The Opus is by far my favorite nasal with the Swift in a close 2nd.

Hi Darryl, I have a similar experience concerning increased humidity and AHI. For about one year I have been using the ResMed s9 Autoset with F20 mask, a pressure setting of 10 cm H2O without a humidifier and have been averaging AHI below 5. The first night I used the H5i humidifier with the heated tubing and the temperature set at 27 C and my AHI went over 9. The second day I reduced the temperature to 23 and the AHI dropped to 6. I know the temperature increase causes AHI increase of  but I also noticed an increased of the AHI with the use of humidifier in general. I am also surprised that there is nothing written about this.

Maybe it is just you three that is affected in this way, I have found since reading your post and playing around that I have the opposite effect.  If I turn down the humidity I not only waken up but my AHI shoots up a lot.

Mind you I have never smoked so that might be a factor in it as well?
