Sleep Apnoea Forum Bringing Help + Support to the Patient

Hi all, Just wondering if you might be able to give me some advice.

I have now been using my CPAP machine for nearly 5 month now, at the beginning I felt a new person and had more energy and was less tired.

The consultant says that I'm compliant, pressure is good and sleeping well, so why am I still feeling tired and have no energy and wanting to sleep all the time. I m sleeping 6+ hours a night and with my mask on all the time. It is now begining to effect my work and home life. My boss asked me the other day if I was not sleeping properly as I looked like ****.

In the morning, I am yawning for the first hour or so, the bags under my eyes feel like suitcases and by lunchtime I could go to sleep. About 2pm the yawning returns for about an hour, when I get home at night I could go to sleep but try not too, if I sit down to watch the news that is it I am a sleep and thats it for the night.

Could any one suggest any think that might allow me to have more energy and feel less tired.

Sorry to hear this Edward, but unfortunately it's not uncommon to get a hiccup along the way, and there could be many reasons for this.  Can you think of anything that's changed, such as weight gain or loss, drinking alcohol in the evening, a change in CPAP pressure, mask leaks, change of mask or anything else you can think of?

Do you use your Respironics System One on CPAP or Auto, and do you have the software to check your results?

Hang in there as it's very positive that you felt great benefit at the beginning of your treatment, so you're on the right track, but have just taken a stumble.
CPAP is only part of the solution. Good sleep, diet and a healthy active social life are key to maintaining a good balance. This all has to be in rhythm with your own happiness and comfort levels. Just getting therapy will only get you so far.

Hi Both

Thanks for the reply so quickly, I could do with lossing a few more pounds, Im still on same prescription and mask as at the beginning, will look into this more details and possible purchase the software.

Many thanks again

Hi Edward

You say that you sleep 6+ hours a night and I wonder what that means - after all, eight hours is six plus. If you mean six and a bit but not seven, I'd look right there for your tirednesss!

I'll take a wild guess and see you staying up 'late' and then rising early to get to work - and then boldly suggest a much improved sleep pattern would do you the world of good. No good just going to bed two hours earlier than normal - you wouldn't sleep. Ten minute increments is the way to go - gradually getting earlier. You can also start to train your body to feel sleepy/tired by establishing a bedtime routine - always the same procedure.

Hi Tiger

Thanks for your reply, its not that im staying up late, if the 10 O'clock news is on, im late for my normal bedtime. Im normlly in bed by 9.30pm  and a sleep and always rising between 4.00am and no later than 5am. Been doing this for years and need to break it.

I am having a holiday in a couple of weeks, so will try and stay up later and get up later. The problem is that once Im awake I have to be up and doing some thing not a lay in person, even if really tired.

Thanks for you help again

Edward

I'm wondering if, although you felt so much better at the beginning, you've now got used to the feeling of being much better, but there's now room for improvement.  (This was my experience too).  Also, regarding the reply you sent to Tigers Fan, it sounds like you're only averaging around 6 hours of sleep, which isn't enough for most people, especially us with sleep apnoea.  I would definitely recommend the software, as I have it for the same machine as you and can't rate it highly enough.  That way you'll be able to actually see what's going on rather than guessing.  In fact there's an advert at the top of this page for the Respironics software, and no I'm not on commission LOL.
