Sleep Apnoea Forum Bringing Help + Support to the Patient

Hi All,

Last week on the television the Embarrassing Bodies program, and, the following mornings Breakfast Show, Sleep Apnoea was discussed?? and on both shows the old chestnut that its an overweight issue was aired yet again.

Both programs stated that OSA is caused by obesity and once the weight has been removed by exercise or by surgery then the OSA is cured and that's that.

I feel we should take these programs and their makers to task for being so flippant, particularly Embarrassing Bodies which is presented by doctors, and request a proper discussion is aired particularly with a view to showing the distress this decease causes in the young that have not yet had a chance to become obese, and air the fact that sufferers are being pushed around as not being disabled "per say" even though it is a life long condition requiring the committed use of the breathing machines issued by sleep clinics.

This has a disastrous effect on employers who are unlikely to employ or retain workers that may be subject to "uncontrollable periods of unconsciousness" during the day, caused by long periods of "sleep deprivation" which is a form of brutality used on prisoners and is banned by civilized nations.

I failed to record these discussions but they should viewable on the channels web sites, I-player, etc

Journalists and programmers do not allow facts to get in the way of a good story.

I've given up with my local radio; it recently devoted a morning to talking about how funny snoring is.

This was only a few days after a discussion on accidents & deaths caused by drivers falling asleep at the wheel:
I called and told the phone operator about the implications of OSA in these incidents, but it wasn't mentioned on air.

I don't believe that it is about facts or a good story. U.K. and U.S. medcial schools are pretty much based on the same curriculum. As of last year these schools spent less than 2 hours of lecture time on sleep. In truth they just don't know. We are going through the same thing in the U.S. Think about it the good story would be that the NHS was not right about apnea.

I saw the Embarrassing Bodies programme and was not happy!  The lady made a statement that her OSA had been cured after the gastric band op.  There was no further sleep study done, but her family told her she didn't have it anymore!!!!  This sends out the message that all people have to do is lose weight to cure themselves, which we know just isn't true in 99.9% of cases.  Also, the fact that CPAP was not mentioned as an option was disgusting!
Sounds like she does not snore anymore. Might be time for an email campaign Kath
Not a bad idea Rock ;)
