When first starting to use a cpap machine how long does it take to start feeling the benefits of using one please.

Mike, I don't think there is an exact answer to this one, some people say after the first night, others like myself can take months. I think it probably depends on the serverity and how long people have been undiagnosed. Having said that, I did feel a bit better after I had my sleep studies probably because I was so sleep deprived and oxygen deprived. I was think yesterady because we had a public holiday in Australia (and I probably don't have a life) but I read the cells in our body change or re generate every 7 years so this maybe a reason why it takes our bodies some time to statrt to heal, just my theory, no facts behind it. I'm assuming you are asking because you haven't started feeling the benefits, just remember everybodies body is different and reacts differently. Keep it up and hopefully you see some benefits soon.

Mike, you will read amazing stories about some people feeling better overnight, but this isn't the case for a lot of us.  I was like Terry, and it took a few months, as I had lots of teething problems with starting out on successful treatment (the mask being the biggest issue).  Remember you have years of sleep debt to pay back your deprived body, but if things don't improve a bit after a while, then you need to tell your clinic this in case your pressures need adjusting.  Hang in there Mike, and keep posting for any help you need - support is crucial to successful treatment - especially at the beginning!

i was wondering too, but had read that it differs for everyone. I have only been using mine since last friday night, so i am very new to it all and havent noticed any change….apart from using the machine isnt as scary as the first night!

I have other health issues too so I really didnt expect anything this quickly. I've been  without much life for so long I have forgotten what its like anyway, its more depressing to be told I have to use this for the rest of my life…so I guess I still have plenty of time to see some improvement :)

Roz B, getting over the first few nights and getting the mask right so there are little or no leaks are the first step, well done. A positive attitude towards CPAP also goes a long way and most people on here have that and just need that little bit more support from people that know what they are going through. Hope you see some improvement with your other illnesses shortly.

Thank you all so much for your supportive comments. I like you Roz have other health issues such as Dilated Cardiomyopathy and Atriall Fibrillation so i should imagine it will take a while before it all comes together and i start feeling the benefits once again thank you all xx

Hi Kath thanks for asking i was going to post you soon. I am not getting on to bad thanks still can't say i am fully refreshed and my wife tells me i have snored a couple of times can you tell me when should i start to feel the real benefits of my cpap and does the cpapa drop your blood pressure please. Hope you are ok.

The reason you're not feeling more refreshed yet could be due to the snoring, as you shouldn't be snoring on CPAP.  If you're using a nasal mask, you may be opening your mouth.  In that case you'll need a chin strap with the nasal mask to keep your mouth shut.  If you're using a full face mask and still snoring, then you need to tell your clinic as your pressures may need raising.

Once you get your treatment working properly, you should find your blood pressure improves.

Mike, I agree with Kath, the only thing I found with the nasal mask and chin strap was that when I was asleep my jaw would still drop even using the chin strap. I use a full face mask and still use a chin strap to keep everything in place. It seems like I am going a bit overboard but it works.

I do have a full face mask Terry and what i find is that during the night my face itches now and again and the mask is restricting me itching my face and this disturbs my sleep.

Don't talk to me about itches Mike :D  In fact if you have a look on my Blog on here under CPAP Tips and you'll see I've put one about keeping a straw nearby to get to those annoying itches.  Worse for me is that for some psychological reason, if I itch one side of my face I then have to itch the other LOL.  The Respironics FitLife Mask I use is the best one for itches, as it's so easy to re-seal it.

Now back to the snoring..... you need to ring the clinic and tell them you're still snoring so they can adjust your pressure.

I use the optilife nasal  mask and that has a small chin strap, it does sometimes cause the mouth to flop open a bit, however my Consultant has requested that I have a Madibular Advancement Device (MAD for short!!) made and wear the two things together…. well that will shut my mouth!! He seems to think i have a small recessed jaw which is  most probably the root of my problem and this will help bring my jaw forward.

I go next week to have the impressions made then i will pick it up two week slater…. its been a slow two weeks already since starting on the CPAP….still along way to go though…. The machine is working as my AHI has reduced significantly, but i am still feeling so tired… more in fact.

Luckily any itching i have experienced has been minimal so i havent had to worry as my mask is fairly open. I read Kath's blog with that info and thought was a great idea. it reminded me back to when i had my leg plastered up year's ago.
