Masks and air leaks.
I hate the mask I have, it's leaky (air), uncomfortable and the only way I can get it to stop leaking is to wedge it further down my face and end up with a sore bridge of my nose. In short I hate it and I am wondering if there are any better masks available on the NHS.
Going to ring the sleep clinic back but am so frustrated. Definitely feel so great with a night's sleep using the machine but all the hassles with the mask mean that many nights I end up either not bothering or pulling the mask off in frustration after two hours or less of sleep.
Just needing to vent really.

Hi Amanda, like you in the early stages of wearing a mask the frustration is multiplied by the fact that you have to wear one of these things anyway, but after the four years since my diagnosis my Sleep Clinic in Bristol has been brilliant.
Working together the team there has tried over six different masks and have always been at the end of the phone or e-mail, I have two main problems I am over 6'3" with a Brucie chin and a big head (in both ways ha ha) and sin of sin's a "mouth breather", in other words no matter what you put over my nose when asleep I simply open my mouth, ruining any pressure advantage in one swoop.
Most recently I have been using a full face mask that cover mouth, nose, eyes and forehead I look like a Fireman and I still opened my mouth under the mask cushion.
I have attached a picture of my latest trial a ResMed HyBrid mask that fits around the chin rather than over the nose, so when I drop my chin the mask comes with it, and so far the best option for me but we are all different.
So always contact your sleep clinic they really are there to help, and keep trying masks and liners until you and your clinic find what fits YOU! and don't hate your mask it's a waste of time, and it's keeping you alive for longer.

Sounds like you're using my 2 favourite masks (as a mouth breather) Graeme - No 1 for me is still the FitLife and No 2 the Hybrid. Good to hear your clinic is so readily available for you, which unfortunately isn't the case throughout the country. Mine's very good too though, apart from the fact they don't stock the FitLife.

Oh you are all just fab....am off to Hobbycraft tomorrow to choose some fabric and will make some of my own. I made the first one by drawing round the mask and cutting about an inch outside it.
I need to make some proper ones though and get the sewing kit out. :)

. I do what Terry does, and turn them the other way around after one night's use, then wash it and use a clean one.

Amanda, the benefit is like Kath you can get leopard skin or any colour you want, I'm boring and get white. Have a feel of the cloth and find one that feels right. I don't sew them just cut them out.

I don't sew them either, which is a good job as I'm useless with a needle and thread. By the way, the ones you pay £20 a pack for aren't sewn either.

Just sharing that I have had another successful full night with the mask. Mask covers are obviously THE big thing for me and I think this means successful treatment with my APAP machine. Had a good 7 hours last night and feel refreshed this morning. Had been dreading going back to clinic as I was going to look like a drop out regarding treatment but now I can say "I've done it and am compliant".
