Sleep Apnoea Forum Bringing Help + Support to the Patient

Hello I'm Mike, I am on a journey to discover the root cause of my years of insomnia and depression, and having read an article on sleep deprivation on the internet and my wife's concern not just over my dreadful Jurassic park t-rex coming snoring but my gagging and gasping for breathe, she counts up to 10 seconds of non breathing some nights, has led me to this excellent website. I'm off to the doctors this week to get the ball rolling. I also have RLS (Restless legs syndrome) which aggravates my condition.

I agree Snoreyhead, as I hear of and see lots of machines for sale due to people purchasing what has turned out to be the wrong type for them, but unfortunately the problems don't come to light at first.  It's fine for people like Symmit (and would have been for me too) with straightforward OSA and no other health problems, but not for everyone, and especially if there are underlying undiagnosed other health conditions that people have.

Unfortunately, the expertise isn't the same at every NHS clinic/hospital, but they are learning...  The good thing is though that we do now have 'Patient Choice' as to where we are referred http://www.nhs.uk/choiceintheNHS/Yourchoices/Pages/Yourchoices.aspx

Your NHS seems a lot better than our, we would be waiting years, I think symmit's point is to get something done as quick as possible, I have just posted a new discussion on a poor man who didn't know he had SA until it was too late. I know Mike says he has had it a long time and a bit longer doesn't matter but it does, the longer it gets left the worse it is and more chance of other illness's occuring. I went down a similar track to symmit and paid more but would have spent 10 times as much as I did knowing what I know now about this illness and how much better I felt even after one night. I think the point here is the urgency.

Yes, I know what Symmit was saying Terry and I totally agree if the appointment is slow or if the GP isn't taking them seriously to take immediate action, but here in the UK there are a lot of NHS clinics that work quickly nowadays, so I was only meaning that he has Patient Choice, and therefore can choose to go to a sleep clinic which works quickly.  A lot of the private tests here are done online and people never get to see a doctor face to face.  However, there are a few private clinics setting up now that do offer this service, thankfully if people can afford it.  The difference here in the UK is that we have a right to free help.  However, I'm all for quick action as you know!

"Just to tidy this up, I finally had an in-person review by my sleep clinic yesterday, who agreed the ResMed AirSense 10 was "wheezy" and replaced the machine."

1st time and I’ve failed the mask leak test

Hi everyone, today I received my rental kit - prisma smart max, plus a Philips dreamwear mask which I’ve been wearing unconnected to try and get used to it. I just did a mask fit test using a medium mask and got a constant red/orange leak warning…See More

Jonathan replied to John's discussion Has anyone been told root cause of their OSA?
"Nope, I just accept that some people's throats tend to close when they sleep, due to a loss of muscle tone during deeper sleep.  Back when I was diagnosed, the sleep lab just filmed you whilst you slept, stuck an O2 meter on your finger,…"

"There's some information here, but generally it's very common and likely due to our anatomy."
