Machine Change causing Issues
Hi Everyone,
I've been getting on very well with my ResMed Auto machine. It was lent to me by the consultant who diagnosed my Sleep Apnoea. I returned it the other day as I had to collect a machine supplied by the NHS. The machine I have been given is an auto machine and is made by Philips Respironics. I think the model is Remstar. Although it is not a new machine, I was assured it was working fine. However since using it my tiredness seems to have returned. I am yawning again and I don't feel alert as I was after using the ResMed auto machine. I am unsure as to whether the machine is faulty or is it of a differing quality to the ResMed? I would be interested to hear if anyone else has found a preference to a particular brand that maybe suited them better? I would love to hear your thoughts?

David, I bought some Remzzz’s mask liners a 6 pack and although they say to
only use them once you can wash them and get about 5-6 uses. I then made a
template of what I needed from their liners and went to a fabric shop and got 3
ft of 50% cotton / 50% poly fabric and cut out my own and they also last 5-6
uses, the next time I bought 3 ft of 50% cotton / 50% lycra fabric. That last
me about 3 months and costs about ten dollars. No need to do any sewing

Hi. I've always drooled (as a mouth-breather). The CPAP machine used to leave me with a sore throat and blocked up nose every morning. After a persistent sore throat, I purchased a humidifier for my Respironics machine, and have been much better ever since! No more sore throats, no more stuffed-up nose. And no more drooling.

I am back at the hospital this coming Tuesday, and hopefully they can use the info from my machine and tell me why I am back to feeling so awful again. I will ask about a humidifier, but I've a feeling I wont be that lucky. On a good note, I finally got permission from DVLA to drive again. I can now get back to work. Hooray!!!

Hi Everyone,
Sorry for not replying yesterday, but I had a family matter to deal with. As for the hospital, they checked my machine and said it was working fine. They didn't analyse the data, as they said they will do that on my next visit on the 31st, next week. They have given me a humidifier to try and see if that helps, and also a slightly different mask, a Quattro FX. I tried them both last night but not sure about the humidifier as it didn't seem to have used any water? But then I wouldn't know what was normal. I woke up this morning with the mask leaking, so I'll try re-adjusting it for tonight. The hospital also said they need me to do another sleep study next week. They say this is normal procedure to see how the therapy is working. I did tell them that I am back to how I was before, yawning all day, constantly tired, and never feeling refreshed! I shall persevere til next week and hpofully when they analyse the data they can help me get back on track?

David, some nights I use a lot of water and sometimes not much I think it;'s best you have another sleep study so they can adjust your settings, good luck with it and let us know how you go.

I have a Respironics machine with humidifier. The amount of water it uses depends on the setting on the dial, the number of hours I use it for, and the general humidity of the room. But I would expect to get through around half a tank of water at the moment. I live in a hard water area, and use bottled water from the supermarket, and then rinse the tank out with vinegar once in while. Stating the obvious, my CPAP machine docs in the humidifier. The power adaptor connects to the humidifier and there's a short cable which goes from the humidifier to the CPAP.
A sleep study with the Remstar would show whether it's working. Perhaps the hospital can let you have another go with the ResMed. Unfortunately it's an expensive bit of kit.

Hi Jonathan,
The humidifier I have on my Respironics machine does not connect as yours. It docks onto the CPAP machine and has the normal hose outlet, but no electrical connection of any sort. I used it again last night and it still has used hardly any water. It is set on number 2 at the moment, so I might try 3 tonight. So far though I still feel very tired and yawning all day again. If I look at the info on my machine my AHI seems to vary from less than 1 to over 3 sometimes.
