Sleep Apnoea Forum Bringing Help + Support to the Patient

Afternoon all,

I wonder if you can help me out on this one please.

I'm at present using the CPAP machine ResMed S9 and have done since April 2013 every thing seemed fine but recently .. October 2013 .. I seem to have a problem with the air flow

At one time the air flow use to circulate around the entire mask and i could breathe in via my nose and mouth with out any problem but now when I put the mask on as per norm i can not feel the air flow at all and it feels suffocating .. as if I've put the mask on with out switching the machine on  so to get any sort of air flow I have to undo the mask slightly and put it at a angle to get any sort of air circulating through the mask which defeats the object as i have now broken the seal and am getting leakage so i get the mask flapping and whistling this occurrence happens when i use both the quatro and full face mask.

i have been to the sleep clinic on numerous occasions and have explained the situation to them and they say the pressure's fine .. I've said it is not about the pressure it's about the air flow and their reply is that i have to acclimatise to it ... after six years using CPAP I think it would be fair to say I am accustomed to using the machine and various types of masks.

So do you think it's me and i need to acclimatise again or is there a problem with the airflow.

Any ideas, suggestions, help and advice would be most helpful and gratefully received.

Many Thanks,

Douglas.

Wow Douglas - that must be a royal pain in the behind.

I am a total newbie to CPAP but I understand what you say about repositioning the mask to try and get a good circulation.  I'm a person who has to get up in the night to pee, and when I return to my mask and it starts up with a pressure of 4 instead of the 16 it was on when I woke up, I have the same suffocating experience.

My first question whenever there is technology involved would be whether it was still fit for purpose, or does it need servicing or replacing.  Does the filter need replacing?  I gather that it doesn't take over long for it to reduce the effectiveness of it (according to my clinic).

I'm also wondering - do you have this sensation if you wake up and you are on full pressure or just on start-up?

I think that in your position I'd be inclined to TELL your clinic that you'd like them to increase the startup pressure a little to help you settle down.  If you have the same problem if you wake up then I really don't know what to suggest.

Wish I could help more.

Douglas, what model Resmed S9 is it? The model name is next to the power button, it will be either an Escape, a Elite or an Autoset. Depending on the model, we can point you in the direction to use free software to check out your data. What is your AHI each night? Also are you feeling Ok the next day? If your AHI is below 5 and as low as possible and you are feeling Ok, your therapy should be working even if you can't feel the pressure that much.

Hi Terry

The model i am using is a escape and im not sure what my AHI is as i cant see it on the setting but ive noticed a slight improvement using the full face mask so hopefully that makes the difference.

some times i feel fine after using it and other days i don't feel the benefit from it but more often than not im ok.

thanks for your imput

Hi Manda thanks for your input i appreciate that .. im now using the full face mask and there does seem to be a difference and im actually going to the clinic to get the machine pat test next week so maybe then i can find some resolution to the issue

Douglas, The Escape is unfortunately the bottom of the range of Resmed models and is not data capable which means with the other models we can use free software to analysis our own data and see what is happening. It doesn't mean it's a bad machine. I would get the clinic to have a look at your data while you are there and give you a print out, Terry

Terry, there's no data on the Escape for the clinicians to see either.  It's not that it's an old machine, it's the fact that it's the basic which only shows pressure and usage.

Douglas, just carefully check your CPAP hose as there may be some small hole in it somewhere.  Especially look around the ends of the hose.  Just a thought....

Kathy, Terry & Manda thank you all for your reply to this .. i will take all that's been said on board

You're welcome Douglas. I was wondering if it could be a slight hole in the hose as a local customer said they felt the same as you.  Today they contacted me to say that after getting their new hose last night (they called round when they discovered it - that's the plus for people who live locally lol) everything was back to normal again last night.

that's a valid point Kathy i will check that .. im going to the clinic on Friday as the machine needs pat testing so i will ask them for a new hose ... seems fine when im standing up and got it on the air circulates but the minute im laying down it does not circulate ... i'm not standing up to sleep as ive done to much of that in the past and that's why im on cpap ! lol

How did you get on with your appointment Douglas? Did you get to the bottom of the problem?

Hey Douglas - how did you get on with your appointment?
