Cpap as hand luggage
I have booked a group trip to Australia in June and most of the group want to fly from Birmingham via Dubai the problem is the only airline that goes from Birmingham is Emirates but the travel agent has had a really difficult time trying to tell them about cpap they at first thought I wanted to use it in-flight so it would need a dry cell battery phone calls have been going backward and forward most of the day between myself travel agent and sleep clinic but now it seems Emirates have told them it needs to go in my hand luggage which will take most of the room and I have to get my own doctor to fill in a their medical form. My doctor has never had anything to do with me regarding my osa. I have a letter from the hospital explaining what the cpap is for which has always been acceptable on European flights does anyone know if there is a way around the putting it in your hand luggage. Sorry this is so long but I have tried to shorten it but this is the first problem I have had in 4 years of using a cpap.

Well done Kath for finding that web page! The other thing to note, is that sometimes checked-in baggage gets lost or arrives late. It happened to my partner's relative travelling with Emirates from Dubai to the UK for my father-in-law's funeral last month. Everyone's bags turned up on a later plane. Jonathan.

That once happened to us - our luggage was left behind + due to me always over-packing I had no decent summer clothes at home until it arrived 5 days later

Changing the subject slightly I am flying BA in May and they say you can take 2 pieces of hand luggage ie small case & laptop. I was told that my CPAP would count as 1 and the rucksack I usually take as the other.So didn't need extra permission.
I do carry a consultants letter & one of Kaths Labels attached to my CPAP as well though.

Is it right that my doctor is charging me £20 to put my name his name and tick a box of the Emirates form which is gobble=de=gook it only asks if I am of sound mind to understand and use the cpap and do I need to use it on take off/landing only or all through the flight in my case no to the using of it. I am passing the airport at the weekend so I will go to the Emiratres customer services desk and sort it from there before I pay my doctor.

You're joking!! Can you get it to the sleep clinic and get them to sign it, as I'm sure they wouldn't charge?

My sleep clinic was the first step in this process I am lucky enough to only live about 3 miles from them so arranged to pick up a new letter with my proper title on (they had put Mr. on my last letter and I never noticed) anyway I asked them to fill it in and she said she couldn't because she is only a clinician so not qualified it was her that said go to your doctors. I think if I get nowhere at the customer services at the airport I am going to put it in my hand luggage I don't feel I want to pay my doctor that much money considering he never see's me for sleep apnoea anyway in fact I only go to the doctors once a year for my blood tests and spirometory test so I am not costing him any of his time.

I wouldn't want to be paying my Dr £20 for that either, and I don't honestly think my GP would ask for this either. I could understand it if you were asking for a reference for something, but this is for your health. It's outrageous!!!

- Just to clear up a few things,if you are asking for letters from your GP, on headed notepaper that qualifies as an extraction from your notes can cost up to £50 maximum, that is the maximum allowed under the Access to Medical Records Act, I would suspect depending on how greedy the the practice is depends on the maximum charge.
- It might be easier if you ring your consultant secretary and ask for copies of the letters as they should be asking if you want them at each visit.
- If you are travelling via Dubai its wise to photocopy all prescriptions and take them with you if you travel will al lot of medication, do not take anything with codeine in it , its a controlled substance penalties are severe so be careful.
- You only need a letter or an airline verification form if you need to use the CPAP/BIPAP machine on board.
- Emirates says the following "Approved CPAP/PAP devices are permitted on board for use during your flight and do not count towards your carry-on baggage limit. The device must be labelled by the manufacturer to reflect that it has been tested to meet applicable United States Federal Aviation Authority/Department Of Transportation requirements for medical portable electronic devices.
II had letter and carried it with me, the checkin staff at Newcastle didn't even know what I was talking about, they asked me if I need to use it during the flight,or if it had any sharp pieces on it no", never got asked again. You need to check that the hospital insurance covers you for taking it out of the UK and or your travel insurance will cover it if its broken.
