Sleep Apnoea Forum Bringing Help + Support to the Patient

I have a CPAP machine with a humidifier and use “Nasonex” spray three hours before going to bed. I find most nights one nostril blocks which interferes with the effectiveness of the CPAP machine. When I stand up the nostril clears fairly quickly but will block again. It can be either nostril and seems to be the one nearest the pillow whichever side I sleep on. I use a nasal mask.  Is there anything you can recommend as the sleep clinic don’t appear to have an answer?

I used to have this problem Ian before my nasal surgery.  Mine was caused by the turbinates swelling, which sounds similar to you as apparently they take it in turns to swell up.  I also had a deviated septum too which needed fixing.  I can now breathe clearly through my nose with no need for the Nasonex I used to use every night.  I just use the Breathe Right Strips, which would be worth you trying and can be bought at local supermarkets and chemists.  It's certainly worth trying other methods before opting for surgery.

Take a look at this FREE UNSTUFF YOUR NOSE Ebook by Dr Steven Park, who is a top ENT Surgeon who spends his time helping people with sleep apnoea and upper airways syndrome.  There's lots of help on his website.

I get the same problem some nights, It doesn't appear to have an adverse affect as long as one nostril is clear for me. You could try some traditional congestion remedies (menthol, olbas oil etc).

i have same problem cant breathe through my nose at all..but i have a bad ENT specalist who just keeps giving my nasal sprays..Grrrr..its been goin on for 6mths and nothing has been done, had the camera and he said iv alot of tissue?? whoever that means, i just wanna breathe, LOl..Rant over!! ..im gonna look at that link ta Kath..hope u get sorted Ian..x x x

Many thanks for your responses and links which I will take a look at. My apnoeas do increase when the blockage occurs and as a consequence have the usual effects from apnoeas.

Ian, I tried using nasal sprays but didn't want to use them every night, similar to what symmit suggested, I now use a bit of Vicks Vapour Rub under my nose and it seems to help. My nose was never really bably blocked but I do feel it ones it up a bit more.

If I feel very bunged up I put a very small quantity of menthol crystals in my humidifier. This tip was given to me at a sleep clinic about 10 years ago,and I've been using when bunged up since then. However, last year an ENT surgeon said to me I shouldn't do this, as the menthol was damaging to inside of nose- he did also say there was no sign of damage to my nose. So, I only use menthol sparingly when really bunged up and uncomfortable.

Beware of using eucalyptus oil in humidifier (Resmed S8) because it will crack the plastic if it comes into contact with it.

Many thanks again for your kind responses.

I use two pillows and found that the top pillow had become rather flat. I purchased from Matalan (UK) a pillow with"bounce" and that has raised by position and with the nasal spray I have not suffered since. Also my apnoea's have reduced too. So I will keep your suggestions available should a recurrence return.

I have two suggestions for you:  Put a few drops of Olbas Oil on a folded up tissue close by the air intake/filter of your machine. Some folk says permanent use of this will damage your nose but like the menthol didn't damage yours, Olbas hasn't harmed me. Works brilliantly, renew drops if you go to the loo.

The othe suggestion is a lot more expensive but is almost a certain cure and will change your breathing experience. It's called a Sinupulse Elite - from Intus or Amazon - and gently pulse washes your sinuses. It take a tiny bit of getting used to but suddenly - Eureka! - I can breathe!!  A side effect seems to be no more colds or flu!
