Sleep Apnoea Forum Bringing Help + Support to the Patient

Hi, as a new user, 2 weeks nearly now, I don't appear to need a humidifier at the moment, but wonder what the percentage of users is that don't need them? Is it a dead certainty I will eventually need one or do a number of use never require one!
Regards
Colin

Colin, it's more for comfort in humid climates, I use mine all the time and turn it up in winter and down in summer like an air conditioner.

They work well for mouth leaks. I used mine when I first started out. Even went as far as to get the Icon which has the highest humidty due to my sinus issues. It turned out that I could not stand the warm air while I was sleeping. Now the only time I use it is when I am awake as it does help clear my sinuses.

When I first started using cpap I wasn't given a humidifier and for several years didn't have one. This didn't cause me problems to begin with, but after a time I started to find myself sneezing a lot and having to take antihistamines on a regular basis. When I mentioned this sneezing problem on a clinic visit I was given a humidifier. Since starting to use the humidifier the sneezing quickly stopped and I've not had to use antihistamines.

I had the same problem with sneezing and drying out of airways, and so was given a humidifier which resolved the problem immediately.   I alter the settings according to the air temperature, and find that the tube fleeces from Hope2Sleep resolve any 'rain out' experienced.   I also use antibacterial filters bought from Hope2Sleep which are invaluable with the problem!!

If you're not struggling with dry airways and mouth you're probably ok Colin, but for me the humidifier made a massive difference, especially bearing in mind I had terrible nasal stuffiness when I first went on CPAP (before my operations which solved this).  I do think there is always a time when people would benefit from them (like during a cold or sinus infection) even if they don't use one all the time.

I also use the CPAP Bacterial Filters like June - not for allergies, but after I'd seen just how much extra dirt they pick up that would otherwise have ended up in my mask.  There's some 'before + after' pics on another discussion Bacterial Filters Discussion
