Sleep Apnoea Forum Bringing Help + Support to the Patient

Well. I am now three days into CPAP and so far:

I feel more alert and refreshed
My skin is clearer (weird but it is!
I am more clear headed.
I am finding it easier to cope with the challenges my autistic son throws at me. He thinks the mask etc is hilarious, I look like Darth Vader apparently! Cheers kiddo.

A few teething issues but nothing I cannot cope with or tweak.

But- the mask and hose, it's a seriously sexy look isn't it lol.

Glad things are going well for you. My son thinks I look like the OOOD from Dr Who!

This is great news already Amanda, and just think of how much better you'll be feeling as time goes on, once your body has been repaid all those years of sleep debt when undiagnosed :)

Incidentally, I have come across a large number of ladies with sleep apnoea who were undiagnosed during pregnancy, and have autistic children and other similar conditions like ADHD etc.  I've not come across any studies yet, but I know research is going on to see if there's a link.  It wouldn't surprise me if there was, bearing in mind how often there is a lack of oxygen to the placenta when we have so many apnoeas in our sleep.  Added to the fact that our undiagnosed sleep apnoea gets worse during pregnancy.  In fact some women only have OSA when pregnant.  Sleep apnoea is like the missing link which escaped all the medics for years, causing so many other health issues.

Heh - glad it's working for you - I used to suffer with unbearably dry and flaky skin that was constantly itchy, and that cleared up for me!

Amanda, well done so far, probably getting more oxygen is helping all the cells to regenerate. Just wait to see how you are a year down the track, a new woman lol. Kath, just on the pregancy, I had my gallbladder out last year and the number of women on another website I am on that have had theirs removed after pregnancy is amazing. I didnt have mine out because of pregnancy, just in case you thought I did lol.

I had my gallbladder removed 6 months after having my son - weird isn't it?

And Kath, that research is interesting especially as autism is so unexplained. My son is fairly high functioning but has autism and adhd as a joint diagnosis (the autism was diagnosed first). I am told tat I did not snore until after my son was born but am giessing you can have sleep apnoea without snoring too.

My Mum definitely has it  - she has to be heard to be believed - how my Dad copes I do not know lol.

Terry..... I didn't think it would be through pregnancy, unless your real name's Theresa LOL.

Amanda - yes, the research is very interesting and I'll post more here when I hear it.  ADHD is definitely linked to sleep apnoea - most children are misdiagnosed with this instead of OSA.  Many of these poor children are put on drugs too, which make sleep apnoea worse (same goes for adults being put on anti-depressants and tranquillisers and treated for depression, rather than the sleep deprivation their undiagnosed OSA is causing).   Here's one of many articles on the link with ADHD http://www.help4adhd.org/en/treatment/coexisting/WWK5D  People can definitely have sleep apnoea without snoring, and this is very common with children especially.

There is also definite evidence that sleep apnoea runs in families too, due to the craniofacial issues, such as large tonsils/adenoids, recessed chin, large uvula, large soft palate, large tongue base etc.  These are obviously things people are born with.  I hope your Mum will seek help now that you've been diagnosed.

CPAP Total Face Mask

I was curious whether anyone has used the CPAP Total Face Masks and could pass on their observations? I've been using an Airfit F20 for years which is fine apart from the permanent red mark on the bridge of my nose, and have recently tried the…See More

Pressure waking me up. Belching and wind

HiI'm using the prisma smart max machine. Initially I was just on a nasal mask, this changed as I was sleeping with my mouth open. I then went to face and nose mask and complained of bad wind and belching. Sometimes the pressure in the night was…See More
